He had been out all night.

After driving Maggie back to the apartment, Logan had spent hour upon hour simply cruising around the city deep in thought. It was dangerous, he soon realized after sitting at a few green lights while thinking of his family, but it was necessary.

When the sun came up, rather than heading home and facing the dismal reality of his empty home life, he made his way to the police station. When he parked, Peters was already standing by his car with two coffees in hand. He handed one to Logan.

“What’s this?” Logan asked.

“I thought you’d be around at some point. It’s gone cold though.”

Logan shook his head and passed on the cold drink. “What do you have on the killer?”

“Nothing on the killer, but the man we shot is gonna make it.”

“Who is he?”

“No idea yet.”

“But he must know who the killer is.”

“Maybe, but he’s not telling.”

“What about his own involvement?”

“Says he does some work for the Doctor but never got involved in his crimes.”

“Think he’s telling the truth?”

Peters shrugged, shivered, and blew out a steamy breath. “Who knows what these psychos do behind closed doors? But there’s definitely something up with him. He hasn’t revealed what work he did exactly, but we’re going to find out.”

Nodding quietly, Logan began to wonder what it’d feel like if he got to ask the questions. All he needed was a few minutes alone in a room with that guy, and he’d push all the right buttons. It was something he’d always been good at, if you excused his recent interrogation.

“You! Get out of here!”

The voice boomed across the parking lot, deep and threatening. Logan turned and saw a man in a well-tailored suit, large and black and marching their way. He pointed at Logan, and as he made the final few steps, Peters whispered quietly.

“That’s the new captain.”

“Ah.”

The captain stopped in front of them, his tall, bulky presence still not quite matching Logan’s. But that didn’t deter him. “I read all about your little stunt at the killer’s residence, and I don’t appreciate you throwing yourself in the way of an investigation.”

“I asked him to be there, Captain,” Peters said.

“Thanks, Peters, but I can handle this.” Logan met the captain’s eye and then spoke firmly. “Sorry for causing you trouble – I really am – but I’m sworn to look for one of the young women. I take my work seriously, and I’ll do anything to do what’s expected of me.”

“What I expect is for you to get the hell out of here, or I’ll have you in cuffs.”

Logan didn’t mind the idea of being in cuffs, but right now, he needed every precious minute he could to figure out what to do next. He backed down, listening to the angel on his shoulder that advised him to be smart about this.

“I’m going,” he said, making a move.

But leaving the police station didn’t mean he couldn’t continue with his search. In fact, now that he could confirm the killer was involved with the deaths of his family, Logan had some ideas on what to do next.
